Most of us value our ability to live independently, but for millions of people, this is not possible. The common solutions are moving in with family, hiring 24/7 caregiving, or moving to a place where they can receive the supports that they require.
But there is a fourth possibility. CreateAbility has an independence solution that is a fit for your loved one wherever they are and wherever they’d like to be. Our systems’ wireless sensors monitor specific activities in the home where they may need reminders, then prompts them when an activity outside the normal range is detected. You can check their status with CreateAbility’s cloud capability, and where necessary, it can send you alerts as well.
Ultimately, the right Independence Family solution can be customized to match the needs of each individual and provide respectful monitoring 24/7, but each of the Independence solutions:
- Builds an environment that supports independence.
- Monitors when you can’t be there so that you can have confidence that your loved one is safe.
- Gives your loved one dignity and safety with less intrusion.
- Empowers your loved one to be more independent.

Independence Keeper
The goal of the Independence Keeper system is to help older adults with dementia maintain their independence, wherever they call home. It allows the individual to stay independent with minimal intrusion while assuring that they are safe.
Independence Keeper tracks vitals and activities of daily living, such as sleep quality, eating patterns, toileting, and safety issues. Respectful prompts and reminders are displayed on their TV or a small tablet which doubles as a digital picture frame of their loved ones. Prompts could include:
- “The stove has been unattended too long.”
- “It’s hot today, please drink more water.”
- “The space heater is still on.”
A small control center in the home collects information from a wireless network of small sensors. The system automatically reports data to the cloud and notifies others when an event has exceeded some trigger or deviated from a normal baseline. The appropriate Vital Sign Monitoring devices can also be added to help patients manage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure (CHF), and diabetes.
Independence Keeper is featured in this video of an overview some of CreateAbility’s recent solutions. Independence Keeper can be customized at three different levels. Please contact us for more information on the plan that will best suit those you care for and their situation.
Fall Stop and Fall Stop Plus
A fall can result in a serious injury and severely damage an individual’s health; however, some falls are preventable. CreateAbility’s FallStop works in a home or facility to dramatically reduce the risk of falls. FallStop uses a variety of technologies that can be customized to the patient, such as: special sensors on chairs, beds, and walkers that detect if the person is attempting to walk unassisted.
FallStop is enhanced when combined with fall assessments on BEAM, SmartMed and Independence Keeper so that it can get a fuller understanding of the individual’s medication adherence and activities of daily living. Fall Stop Plus adds the power of visual pattern recognition to predict or detect fall situations. Fall Stop Plus’ fast analytics detect an unsteady gait, a spiral pattern or swaying when attempting to stand unassisted, then immediately alert staff or nearest responder as it respectfully coaches the individual to wait for assistance.
Independence Builder
For people with intellectual developmental disabilities, such as Down syndrome or autism, living as independently as possible provides dignity and a chance to learn new skills. CreateAbility’s Independence Builder fosters this independence by providing a natural and mindful support system so the individual can be self-sufficient and self-confident.
Independence Builder uses wireless sensors placed discreetly around the home to validate that certain tasks and activities have taken place by a specific time. It learns what normal activity looks like for the individual and forms a baseline. The system then automatically reports data to the cloud and notifies others when an event deviated from this base. Emergency notifications are sent through text or e-mail, and a web-based portal is included for anyone with the proper permissions, allowing loved ones and caregivers to check in and know the individual is safe.
Independence Builder can monitor activities such as:
- Medication
- Safe kitchen activity
- Hygiene
- Nighttime restlessness
Independence Builder uses tablets around the home that double as digital picture frames to provide respectful prompts and reminders if these tasks or activities are not performed. The tablets also provide positive reinforcement and encouragement to the person. The system detects the status of the individual’s environment and dynamically adjusts the prompts to coach them how to handle various scenarios independently.

Back-to-Independence
After a traumatic or acquired brain injury, returning to independent living can be a struggle for the individual and those that are providing care. CreateAbility alleviates some of the stress with Back-to-Independence, which uses a network of small, battery powered, wireless sensors to monitor key activities in areas where the person need support, such as the bathroom or the kitchen to accomplish typical activities of daily living.
Potential sensor placements include:
- Door sensors: Uses a magnetic sensor which can be placed on door or window pane, inside refrigerators, pantry doors, cabinets, or utensil drawers.
- Motion sensor: Uses an invisible beam to measure the motion of a human being within the space to ensure safe movements.
- Temperature sensor: Uses an invisible beam to measure the temperature of their surroundings.
Simple, respectful reminders are displayed on a TV, phone, or tablet to help individuals remember important tasks and make better decisions on their road to recovery. Back-to-Independence can also work in concert with the MeMinder talking to-do list.
All information is reported to the cloud for anyone with the proper permissions to view, allowing loved ones and caregivers to check in and know the individual is safe. If needed, emergency notifications can be sent through text or e-mail.
For caregivers, Back-to-Independence gives you a tool to help build your loved one’s independence and gives you more freedom and peace of mind.
